“The threads of science and humanity were so astutely woven together that I marvelled at the beauty of it… I shed a few tears and my heart was so full, I felt like I could float into the sky, defying gravity.”

Little Blue Dot has been developed in collaboration with astrophysicists, Dr Rosemary Mardling and Dr Alex Wallace from the Monash University School of Physics and Astronomy and commissioned by Monash University Performing Arts Centres with co-commissioning support from Geelong Arts Centre.
Grounded in a camping star-gazing adventure between a child and their dad, Little Blue Dot tackles the big questions we ask about the universe, our place in it and why this precious little blue dot floating in space, matters so very much.
The show combines accurate science and rare puppetry techniques (corridor of light and blacklight) to stunning effect for schools and general public audiences.
“LITTLE BLUE DOT is an important work for the inspiration of young scientists. Children with their insatiable curiosity are natural scientists, but in most cases our society does not nurture this curiosity but rather ‘others’ those who are keen to pursue scientific or mathematical study, labelling them as bookish or ‘nerds’. But the skills to question, think critically and be engaged have never been more essential in the modern ‘post-truth’ world. LBD gives the gift of insight into some of nature’s most incomprehensible mysteries and rewards inquisitive minds with understanding. It demonstrates in its very existence how naturally art and science go together.”
— Dr Rosemary Mardling
LITTLE BLUE DOT is a family work that marries accurate astrophysics with a human story of childhood passion, deep parental love and important lessons about the uncertainty of life. It has exceptionally strong links to curriculum and was equally loved by school students and families who attended the presentations in 2024.
